Mark your calendars! This year, Brake Safety Week is scheduled from August 24 to 30, and it’s an essential time for all stakeholders in the commercial motor vehicle industry. In a collaborative effort across Canada, Mexico, and the U.S., law enforcement personnel will take to the roads to conduct inspections, promote awareness, and gather critical data on brake safety.
This week, CVSA-certified inspectors will conduct routine inspections on commercial motor vehicles, with a particular focus on brake systems and components. This year’s initiative places particular emphasis on drums and rotors—key elements that can significantly impact a vehicle’s braking efficiency. Issues with these components can lead to serious risks, as broken pieces may dislodge while on the road, posing dangers to other vehicles and potentially resulting in injuries or fatalities.
Vehicles identified with brake-related out-of-service violations will be removed from the road until the issues are rectified, ensuring that safety remains the top priority. Throughout Brake Safety Week, inspectors will diligently gather data on the inspections performed, the condition of brake systems, and any violations found. Some jurisdictions will even utilize performance-based brake testers (PBBT) to evaluate the braking performance of vehicles, contributing to a comprehensive dataset that the CVSA will analyze and share publicly later this year.
Education plays a significant role in this initiative. Inspectors, motor carriers, and industry professionals will engage in educational outreach during Brake Safety Week. CVSA also provides valuable resources to assist drivers, motor carriers, owner-operators and mechanics in preparing for this critical event.
The overarching goal of Brake Safety Week is to enhance brake safety across North America. By conducting thorough roadside inspections and educating all involved parties about the importance of proper brake maintenance and operation, we can work together to reduce roadway crashes and promote safer travel for everyone.
Stay tuned for more updates and resources to ensure you’re prepared for Brake Safety Week!
