The American Transportation Research Institute (ATRI), the trucking industry’s leading not-for-profit research organization, has unveiled its 21st annual Top Industry Issues report, highlighting the transportation industry’s most pressing challenges. For the third year running, the Economy has emerged as the top concern for trucking professionals, followed closely by Lawsuit Abuse Reform and Insurance Cost and Availability.
This year’s report features familiar issues, with the Economy maintaining its number one position. Lawsuit Abuse Reform and Insurance Cost and Availability have each moved up one spot to become the second and third top concerns, respectively. Meanwhile, the shortage of available Truck Parking dropped to fourth, and Driver Compensation remains steady at fifth.
Notably, the report introduced four new issues, including English Language Proficiency for Drivers and the impact of Artificial Intelligence in Trucking. Driver Training Standards, which have been a concern since 2019, gained enough traction in this year’s survey to rank as the ninth overall concern, coming in seventh among truck drivers specifically.
Demographically, over 46% of respondents were motor carrier executives and personnel, 30% were truck drivers, and the remaining 23% were other industry stakeholders. Among truck drivers, the top three concerns were Driver Compensation, Truck Parking, and English Language Proficiency. Conversely, motor carriers prioritized the Economy, Lawsuit Abuse Reform, and Insurance Cost and Availability.
This year’s survey attracted over 4,200 trucking industry stakeholders, a 14% increase from the previous year. Participants included motor carriers, truck drivers, industry suppliers, driver trainers, and law enforcement, among others.
The complete survey results were unveiled during the 2025 American Trucking Associations’ Management Conference and Exhibition. For those interested in a deeper dive into the findings, the full report is available on ATRI’s website.
