The Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance (CVSA) has officially announced that this year’s Operation Safe Driver Week will be held from July 13 to 19. This important initiative focuses on safe driving enforcement and outreach, aiming to enhance driving behaviors through education, traffic enforcement strategies and meaningful interactions between drivers and law enforcement.
During Operation Safe Driver Week, law enforcement personnel across Canada, Mexico and the United States will be actively monitoring both commercial motor vehicle drivers and passenger vehicle drivers for unsafe driving behaviors. Common infractions that will be scrutinized include speeding, distracted driving, tailgating and driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs. Drivers engaging in these dangerous behaviors can expect to be pulled over and may receive a warning or citation.
This year, the spotlight will be on reckless, careless, and dangerous driving. Reckless driving is characterized by willful disregard for the safety of others and property, while careless or dangerous driving involves operating a vehicle without due care and attention, showing a lack of reasonable consideration for other road users.
The urgency of this initiative is underscored by alarming statistics from the U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, which reported 42,514 fatalities due to traffic crashes in 2022. In Canada, Transport Canada recorded 1,931 motor vehicle fatalities that same year, while Mexico reported a staggering 15,979 road deaths. CVSA’s Operation Safe Driver Program aims to tackle these troubling numbers by working to reduce crashes caused by unsafe driving behaviors.
In addition to traffic enforcement, driver education is a key component of Operation Safe Driver Week. The CVSA provides a variety of resources for new and teen drivers, as well as for commercial motor vehicle operators. Public service announcement videos are available for download and distribution to further spread the message of safe driving. Furthermore, CVSA is offering Operation Safe Driver Week postcards at no cost to its industry and enforcement members, available in English, French and Spanish.
